The Lamp Eye Tetra, scientifically known as the Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae, is a popular freshwater fish among aquarium enthusiasts.

  • Physical Appearance: Lamp Eye Tetras typically have a slender, elongated body with a slightly forked tail fin. Their most distinctive feature is their large, reflective eyes, which give them their name. They usually have a silver or gold body coloration, sometimes with a hint of pink or green, and a black stripe running along their lateral line.

  • Size: They typically grow to about 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6 cm) in length, making them a relatively small fish suitable for many aquarium setups.

  • Behavior: Lamp Eye Tetras are known for their peaceful nature, making them excellent community fish. They are typically active swimmers and enjoy being kept in groups of at least six individuals. In a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming space, they will often display schooling behavior.

  • Water Parameters: These fish are relatively adaptable to a range of water conditions. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.5) and water temperature between 72°F to 78°F (22°C to 26°C). Good water quality is essential for their health and well-being.

  • Diet: Lamp Eye Tetras are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods. In the wild, they primarily feed on small invertebrates and plant matter. In the aquarium, they can be fed a balanced diet of high-quality flake or pellet food supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.

  • Tank Setup: Providing a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming space mimics their natural habitat. They appreciate a densely planted tank with floating plants to diffuse the light. Ensure the tank has a tight-fitting lid as they are known to be jumpers.
